Exploration & Adventure Programme
The Journey is our programme of trips and immersive experiences designed to inspire adventure, curiosity, and personal growth beyond the classroom. Highly anticipated by students from Years 5 to 10, each Journey is a four- to five-day experience filled with exciting destinations, new challenges, and unforgettable memories. Previous voyages have taken students to destinations across France and England such as London, Ardèche, Bristol, and Biarritz.
While students enjoy exploring new places and discovering beautiful landscapes, what truly makes The Journey unique are the age-appropriate outdoor adventure and action sports activities. From surfing in Bristol and kayaking through the rapids of Ardèche to trying out an Olympic rafting course in London, students are given opportunities to step outside their comfort zones, develop new skills, and create lasting memories through experiences that simply cannot happen in a classroom setting.
Student safety and well-being remain at the heart of every Journey. Before participating in any activity, students receive essential training and safety preparations from professional and patient mentors, ensuring the protection and support of everyone involved throughout the trip.
As the week progresses, students often demonstrate remarkable confidence, independence, and teamwork. Whether encouraging one another during activities, taking responsibilities, or learning how to adapt to the new sports, these experiences help students grow both socially and personally.

There were 20 students in Biarritz but there was never a divide. It was really heartwarming to see how everyone looked out for one another, making for a great atmosphere the whole week. - Zoë Jones (Head of Key Stage 4)
Trips like 'The Journey' do something a classroom cannot: they prove to our students that they are capable of so much more than they realise, and they remind us all that we belong to a deeply supportive community here at MBIS - Sarah Michael (Head of Well-Being and Safeguarding)

"The point is, to live everything. Live the questions.' Rilke
Our expedition week, 'The Journey', did not receive its name by chance.
In talking to our students since they have returned, all of them said they felt they had grown in some way.
The kayakers who both pulled in opposite directions and tipped their raft, falling into the water, and soaking their warmer clothes told me the kinship and kindness from their community afterwards, sharing dry clothes, airing wet ones, felt a genuine sense of gratitude from an initially disappointing incident.
The students who could not possibly believe they could even attempt the high ropes course, only to be the last one up there, swinging away and having the time of their life until being begged to come back down before dinner unlocked layers of previously unknown courage.
And in the theatres of London, usually arts-shy individuals, for whom confident presentations of performance feel beyond them, left shows like Matilda beaming with the kind of joy that a shared experience, without phones (!), is increasingly becoming a hallmark of Gen Z.
All of these and so many more moments capture Rilke's comment above. Sometimes certainty is restrictive; perhaps only through living the questions of how we should try to shape our lives can produce real epiphanies about the innate, and sometimes untapped capabilities we have as individuals and groups.
The Journey continues to provide these kind of opportunities in spades, and my thanks go out to the students, teachers, and support staff who helped curate these moments for them.
