Cross des Îles: Mougins School’s Young Champions Shine
Michelle Kimberley-Johnson

On December 1st, under perfect blue skies, over 30 of our Mougins School students competed in the renowned Cross des Îles, held on the historic Île Sainte-Marguerite. Accompanied by teachers, parents, and even our school mascot, our young athletes joined 1,272 of the best runners from across the French and Italian Riviera, representing cities such as Genoa, San Remo, Cannes, and Nice.

The day kicked off with the youngest runners, the 6 and 7-year-olds. Our three Year 2 runners showed incredible determination, with Thomas finishing in the top 20, Colin in 48th, and Artem in 59th out of 136 competitors. These performances were impressive, especially considering they were the youngest in their age group, bravo!

Next up were the Poussins, competing in the same 1.3 km race. Max stood out with an incredible 10th-place finish, while Boris came in 40th out of 103 runners. The Poussines also gave a strong performance, with Savannah and Sophia both finishing in the top half of their 74-strong field, showing great promise for future events.

The competition continued with the 1.8 km races for the 2012-2013 age groups. In a thrilling race of 82 girls, Yulia finished an impressive 10th place, just 30 seconds behind the winner. Toni took 14th place, while Indi, the youngest in her age group, secured 20th. Milla, only 19 seconds behind her sister, finished 36th. Rebecca and Adwita, also in the younger age group, gained valuable experience for next year, placing just one minute behind their teammates. With these stellar performances, the girls’ team claimed 3rd place overall, behind Nice and Cannes, beating clubs such as Cagnes, Menton, Valbonne, and multiple teams from Cannes.

The boys’ team had a similarly competitive race, with Basile finishing 14th, and Hector in 24th, the youngest in his age group. Nikolas placed 28th, followed by Julius in 29th. Mark finished in 44th, while Flynn, Cooper, and Leonid, all in the youngest part of their age group, came in 55th, 56th, and 57th, respectively. Their team secured a fantastic 3rd place finish, trailing behind Grasse and Cannes, and outperforming teams like Nice, Menton, and Bordighera.

In the 2010-2011 girls' race, Layla and Emilia were the only Mougins runners, competing in a strong field of 82 athletes. Both ran the challenging 2.8 km course with a few tough hills, finishing in 49th and 59th place, respectively. Their determination in their first big race was commendable, and we are also proud of Olivia, who finished 6th while running for her local athletics club.

The final race of the day was a mixed 3.3 km race for the 2010-2011 boys and the 2008-2009 girls, which saw 108 runners, including 42 girls. Our boys finished in an outstanding 4th place out of 13 teams, with Tommy, James, Egor, and Harrison delivering strong results. The girls’ team also performed well, with Marguerite finishing 10th, Lyla in 13th, Leila in 16th, and Sophie in 35th.

Congratulations to all our runners for their exceptional effort, team spirit, and commitment to representing Mougins School with pride. Your determination and resilience have truly earned you a place in our Hall of Fame. Bravo to our young champions!

Go Mougins!
