People of Mougins: An Interview with Emma Olsthoorn, our Science Teacher
Julie Dufaye

This week, we sat down with Emma Olsthoorn, our new teacher at Mougins British International School, to learn more about her journey, her passion for science, and her experience joining the Mougins School community

Q: Emma, could you introduce yourself to our community?

Hi, I’m Emma Olsthoorn. I previously worked as a business project consultant in a number of countries. After having children, I took a career break to look after them. During this time, I began thinking about how I wanted the next chapter of my life to look. I decided it was time for a career change.

Q: What drew you to science and eventually to teaching?

My first degree was in Chemistry, and I’ve always been fascinated by science — from understanding why water swirls down the plughole, to making bath bombs at home, to exploring the wonders of our solar system. I love discovering how things work, both in the world around us and within us.

I was looking for a career where I could make a difference, keep learning, and use my curiosity every day, and teaching really feels like the perfect fit. I’m absolutely loving the experience so far and learning just as much as my students (if not more!). Every day truly is a school day for me too.

Q: You’ve also worked in meaningful roles before joining Mougins School. Can you tell us about that?

I worked for Help for Heroes, a charity that supports wounded veterans and their families. I was really proud to work for them and contribute to something that truly changed lives.

My steepest learning curve came when I mentored a 17-year-old young man from Angola who was living in London and experiencing homelessness. It was a two-year journey of learning, patience, and persistence from both of us. So many parts of daily life, basic education like how to shake someone's hand I took for granted at 17, just weren't available for him. Progress doesn't happen overnight; however, now he is a policeman for the Metropolitan Police and graduated in business at university. He is also married to a girl he met in the hostel.

Q: How has your transition into teaching at Mougins School been?

I’ve been thoroughly welcomed into the teaching family here at Mougins School. I’ve honestly never experienced such genuine support and care when starting somewhere new. The sense of community and encouragement has made this transition into teaching rewarding.

Q: Your son also attends Mougins School. How has his experience been?

My son joined the school before I started as a teacher, and from the very beginning, he’s been happy and enthusiastic about coming to school each day. Over the past months, I’ve watched him grow into a confident, outgoing child, and his reading has improved enormously. The teachers keep me regularly updated on his wellbeing and progress, and it’s been wonderful to see firsthand how dedicated and nurturing the staff are.
