A Joyful Beginning: Belonging and Bravery in The LaunchPad
Julie Dufaye

As the doors of our school reopened this September, a very special group of children took their first steps into the world of learning. For some, it was their first experience of school — an emotional milestone not only for them but for their families too. In The LaunchPad, our integrated early years centre, we have had the privilege of witnessing this journey begin with incredible courage, curiosity, and care.

More Than a Classroom

From the very first day, our youngest learners have been gently guided into a space designed not only for education, but for connection and comfort. The LaunchPad is more than a classroom — it is a place where children feel safe, known, and part of a community. Belonging is at the heart of everything we do, and we are already seeing just how powerful that sense of belonging can be.

An Approach that Nurtures Growth

Our blended pedagogical approach — which draws from child-led exploration, structured learning opportunities, and a deep respect for each child’s unique pace of development — allows us to truly meet the children where they are. In these first few days, we've seen the benefits of this approach come to life. Children who entered the classroom with quiet hesitancy are now beginning to form friendships, engage in conversations, and explore their environment with growing confidence.

Focusing on Emotional Security

This week, our focus has been on supporting emotional security and fostering relationships — the building blocks for all future learning. Through carefully planned activities and warm, responsive interactions, we have seen remarkable growth in just a few days. Children are already recognising familiar routines, sharing moments of joy with their peers, and expressing themselves in both verbal and non-verbal ways..

A Community of Care

Our teachers and support staff have worked attentively to create a rhythm and environment that honours each child’s individuality while building a shared classroom culture. Every story shared, every hand held, every smile returned has helped to weave the fabric of a group that is beginning to truly feel like a little family.
Imagination Takes Flight
At The LaunchPad, learning is also about sparking imagination and making each day magical. Last year, our educators transformed the classroom into a lively airport, where children could play at travelling the world. This year, the adventure has gone even further — the class has become a space zone! With planets, rockets, and a starry sky, our little explorers have stepped into the shoes of astronauts, dreaming big and reaching for the stars.

Parents as Partners

We also want to recognise the important role you — our parents and carers — have played in this transition. Letting go is never easy, especially when it’s the first time. Your trust in us, your partnership, and your support have been instrumental in helping your child feel secure and loved in this new environment.

Looking Ahead

As we reflect on this first week, we are proud. Proud of the resilience of our children, proud of the gentle strength of our team, and proud of the caring community we are building together. We know the journey has only just begun, but already, the foundations are strong.

This is what The LaunchPad is all about — launching children into a world of learning with a sense of belonging, a love of discovery, and the confidence that comes from being seen and celebrated for exactly who they are.

Thank you for being part of this beautiful beginning. We can’t wait to see where the year takes us — together.
