Confidence from the Start: Encouraging Independence and Resilience
Patricia Moon

In The LaunchPad, our youngest learners take their first steps into education with curiosity, courage, and a growing sense of independence. From the very beginning, we focus on helping children believe in themselves — giving them the confidence to explore, make decisions, and take ownership of their learning.

Everyday activities are designed to nurture independent thinking. Whether it’s choosing which learning activity to start with, deciding how to build a tower in the construction area, or finding their own way to solve a puzzle, children are encouraged to try, test, and discover. These moments of exploration teach them that their ideas have value and that making mistakes is an important part of learning.

Our teachers play a crucial role in creating this balance between guidance and freedom. They know when to step in with support and when to step back to let children find their own way. Gentle questioning, encouragement, and open-ended challenges help children build problem-solving skills and confidence in their own abilities.

This growing sense of autonomy doesn’t just support academic development — it shapes social, emotional and physical growth too. Confident children are more willing to share ideas, take turns, and collaborate with others. They learn resilience, empathy, and the joy of achieving something on their own.

One recent “proud moment” came this week when I watched H, aged 4, learn to push the pedals on the bike to propel himself around the playground on the three wheeler. I’m not sure who had the biggest smile, him or me!! With encouragement from his teachers and plenty of practice, he finally managed it. Small victories like this build big confidence, laying the foundations for lifelong learning.
As children progress through Primary, these early experiences evolve into deeper lessons about resilience — learning to overcome challenges and keep going even when things feel difficult. Whether it’s refining a story draft after feedback, working together on a tricky science investigation, or rethinking a design in art, students learn patience, problem-solving, and perseverance.

Teachers carefully scaffold these moments, helping children reframe frustration as opportunity. Phrases like “I can’t do this yet” and reflective questions such as “What could you try next?” encourage a growth mindset and build self-belief.

Resilience is closely tied to wellbeing. Children who learn to take risks, recover from setbacks, and manage frustration feel more secure and capable in all areas of school life.

In The LaunchPad, we believe independence and resilience go hand in hand. From their very first days at school, children are supported to believe in themselves, embrace challenges, and grow into confident, capable learners ready for whatever comes next.
