World Food Day 2025: Building Awareness Around Healthy Choices
Valentina Deidda

Yesterday, Mougins British International School celebrated World Food Day at school, an international event launched by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. Held each year on 16 October, World Food Day raises awareness about global hunger, food security, and the importance of sustainable food systems. It’s a chance to reflect not only on what we eat, but also on how our food choices affect the planet and people around us.

Exploring Healthy and Unhealthy Eating

Throughout the week, particularly in primary, we’ve been exploring the topic of healthy and unhealthy eating. Pupils have been encouraged to think about what a balanced diet looks like in everyday life and to reflect on their own eating habits. Through discussions and activities, they’ve been learning how the food we choose can impact our health and wellbeing.

A Special Vegetarian Lunch by Chef Bruno

To mark the occasion, Chef Bruno prepared a special vegetarian lunch using seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. This was a brilliant opportunity for pupils to try something new and to understand why vegetarian meals are often considered more environmentally friendly. Plant-based dishes typically have a lower carbon footprint, use fewer natural resources, and support biodiversity. Choosing seasonal and local produce also helps reduce food miles and supports local farmers.

Healthy Eating Poster Competition

We also held a Healthy Eating Poster Competition, organised by our eco delegates during both primary and secondary lunch breaks. With the help of the eco team and some fantastic PTA parents, pupils were invited to create posters promoting healthy eating. The creativity and enthusiasm were fantastic, and the posters sparked some great conversations about food choices across the school.

Stay tuned: we’ll be announcing the three winning posters and their prizes very soon!
