Outdoor Learning at Mougins British International School
Gisele E. (Sixth Form Student)

Set within an exceptional natural environment, Mougins British International School offers students the rare opportunity to learn in close connection with nature. Surrounded by forest, the campus provides an inspiring backdrop that enhances both wellbeing and academic development.

Throughout the school year, the Primary School delivers a carefully designed Outdoor Learning programme, enabling students to take their learning beyond the classroom multiple times during the week. Through regular sessions held in the forest and across the school grounds, pupils engage in experiential learning linked to the EYFS framework, deepening their understanding through exploration, observation, and hands-on activities.

This approach is rooted in the belief that meaningful learning happens when children actively engage with the world around them. By integrating the natural environment into the curriculum, teachers create rich, dynamic learning experiences that foster curiosity, independence, and critical thinking.

One of the teachers supporting this programme is Claire Garcia (Primary Teacher and Head of Key Stage 2), who has observed that her students have reacted very positively to the outdoor learning by not only enjoying themselves  but also have an increased responsiveness to the content during these sessions and when back in the classroom. As Ms Garcia explains, the introduction of outdoor learning stems from “a belief that children learn best through hands-on, real-world experiences. “ and a desire “to make the most of these natural resources to enrich the curriculum, deepen understanding, and foster a connection with nature.”  While outdoor learning does require additional planning for the teachers, many also find it highly rewarding, as it allows for more creative and engaging lesson design.

The impact on students is both immediate and lasting. Students have responded enthusiastically to this opportunity to enjoy the warmer weather and pay more attention to their surrounding environment. Charlotte from year 6 reports “We have really nice times together and it feels good to go outside. In the forest, we feel calm and happy, like we are close to nature”.

Through developing a deeper connection with nature, our students are also learning how they can actively contribute to protecting it. As part of our commitment to the Eco-Schools programme and environmental awareness, they are encouraged to adopt responsible behaviours. During their outdoor lessons, students have shown great care by picking up litter — in their own words, to “help nature” — reinforcing their role as responsible and environmentally conscious citizens. Such experiences contribute not only to academic progress, but also to emotional wellbeing.

Some might assume that learning outdoor, with a higher likelihood for distractions, would impact the students attention spans and reception to the lessons. However, Ms Garcia notes that not only do the students have an increased enthusiasm in the outdoor session but “Importantly, this hasn’t reduced their enjoyment of classroom learning - rather, it complements it by bringing concepts to life in different ways.”

A longstanding feature of school life, including initiatives such as "School in the Woods", Outdoor Learning reflects Mougins British International School’s commitment to a holistic education. One that balances academic excellence with personal development and a genuine connection to the world beyond the classroom. After all, Adrianna and Lana from year 3 are big advocates for outdoor learning in reporting, “We are always excited for School in the Woods every week!”
