This term, our Year 9 students took part in the “Be the Drop that Starts the Wave” Water Project Competition, a hands-on initiative that perfectly ties into their Geography studies. Building on Year 8’s exploration of “What is our impact on our planet” and Year 9’s focus on “Earth’s natural resources”, students became eco-heroes, investigating water usage, creating inventive solutions, and learning about the water cycle in exciting, creative ways.

Mission 1 — The Magic Drop (Science & Geography)

Students followed the journey of a single drop of water, exploring evaporation, condensation, precipitation, rivers, oceans, mountains, and cities. From illustrated travel diaries to mini-comics and animations, the stories brought the water cycle to life. One student imagined a drop starting its journey from a melting glacier in Alaska, flowing through rivers, lakes, a city’s water system, and finally returning to the sea as part of a wave. Mila and Cosmo created stunning drawings of waterfalls and complete water cycle processes, including precipitation, sublimation, groundwater flow, and plant uptake.

Mission 2 — Detectives of the Drip (Eco-Action)

Becoming water detectives, students observed daily water use at school. They measured tap flows and handwashing times, discovering that small changes, such as reducing tap running time by just a few seconds, could save significant amounts of water. Their creative solutions, like “tap patrols” and awareness campaigns, were presented as videos and posters — all under the motto “Stop the Drop!”

Mission 3 — The Big Invention (Innovation & Creativity)

Students were encouraged to invent imaginative solutions to save or reuse water. One inventive project designed a rainwater-collecting garden that channels water underground into a purifying storage system, which could then supply buildings when needed. Other students showcased prototypes and design boards, demonstrating impressive creativity and environmental awareness.

Hands-On Learning and Creativity

The projects went beyond assignments. Students built nature-inspired maquettes, complete with rivers made of cellophane, cotton clouds, mountains, and bushes, and prepared engaging presentations to share their findings. The variety of formats allowed students to express themselves in ways they felt most comfortable, combining science, geography, creativity, and practical problem-solving.

A huge thank you to Mrs Stephanie Gallet, our Geography teacher, for initiating this project and providing such a rich, hands-on learning experience. Her dedication allows students to explore, create, and learn in ways that are meaningful, engaging, and fun — turning science and geography into an unforgettable adventure.
