Empowering Sustainability: Mougins Primary School's Eco Week Manifesto
  • Primary Matters

Eco Week at Mougins School is more than an event; it serves as a rallying call for environmental responsibility and global citizenship. As proud members of Globeducate, we take pride in nurturing a culture of sustainability within our school community. This year's Eco Week was a testament to our dedication, showcasing a diverse array of activities aimed at educating, inspiring, and empowering our students to become agents of positive change. Building upon our achievements, including earning the Eco-School Silver Medal last year, we continue to strive for excellence in sustainability education.

Global Recycling Day (18th March):

Global Recycling Day acted as a catalyst for change, urging us to rethink our approach to waste. We initiated new projects alongside our Eco-Schools student council, encouraging children to play an active role in sustainable practices. Whether it was implementing recycling bins, composting initiatives or conducting zero-waste workshops, our school community actively participated in meaningful discussions and sought out actionable solutions.

UNESCO International Day of Forests (21st March) & UNESCO World Water Day (22nd March):

In accordance with Globeducate's dedication to global citizenship, we honoured UNESCO's International Day of Forests and World Water Day through engaging activities and dialogues. Through our "7 changes over 7 days" campaign, students delved into the importance of water responsibility, demonstrating how small adjustments can lead to significant energy conservation and positive behavioural shifts over time. Additionally, our Year 2 students engaged in a forest walk to conduct litter picking, fostering a hands-on connection with environmental stewardship.

WWF Wild Wisdom Quiz (21st March):

The Wild Wisdom Quiz, organised by WWF, provided a platform for our students to showcase their knowledge and passion for sustainability. Engaging in spirited online quizzes, our participants explored pressing environmental issues and collaborated with peers globally to seek solutions.

Earth Hour (24th March):

As the sun set on Eco Week, Mougins School joined the global community in solidarity for Earth Hour. By dimming non-essential lights for an hour, we symbolically demonstrated our commitment to reducing energy consumption and mitigating climate change. Families were encouraged to partake in their own "hour of darkness," fostering a sense of collective responsibility.

Innovative Initiatives in Primary School:

Throughout Eco Week, creativity flourished in Mougins school, as students embraced innovative initiatives.

Nature Appreciation Walk: Year 2 students were tasked with documenting the abundance of items starting with the letter B, such as bees, butterflies, bugs, birds, blossoms, and beautiful flowers. They relished the spring weather while discussing the importance of protecting our natural world, including its smallest inhabitants.

Upcycled Art Workshops: Through environmental art sessions, students engaged in hands-on outdoor learning, cultivating a deeper connection with the natural world while exploring techniques for creating eco-friendly art, including dreamcatchers in Year 1.

Monica Fontán, Globeducate Education Director, explains:
“In the face of escalating environmental challenges and what can feel like a race against the clock to protect our planet's future, Globeducate Eco-Week serves as a beacon of hope, illuminating the path towards a brighter, more sustainable future for generations to come. We are committed to ensuring our entire community embraces sustainability education and makes progress, one eco-friendly step at a time.”

As we reflect on Eco Week 2024, we are filled with gratitude for the collective efforts of our students, teachers, and families. Together, we stand committed to nurturing a culture of sustainability, one action at a time.
