The Learning Curve

If we want things to stay as they are…

Readers of Italian literature amongst us will know the name Giuseppi Tomasi di Lampedusa.

Perhaps most famous for his novel, ‘The Leopard’, he has also become widely ‘memed’ for a line from the text. His character Tancredi Falconeri says at one point, although the translations vary, ‘"If we want things to stay as they are," he tells his uncle, "things will have to change."

Change does not have to be experienced as loss. Far from it. And this week, in our assembly, Isabella and Raphaël, we heard of a number of ways in which MBIS is starting on the path towards becoming an accredited Eco School.

Amending our relationship with the natural world, how we recycle, reuse, and reduce our impact on the beautiful setting we are so fortunate to enjoy in and around our campus is a key goal.

Raising both awareness and participation in such aims is key and this coming Friday, there is a great initiative taking place.

In keeping with the nationally recognised Nettoyons La Nature’ (Clean up Nature) programme, over 40 student volunteers from school will give up their Friday Thrive choice, walk the woods with teachers and, with gloves and bags at the ready, restore some beauty to the landscape we so love.

It is a start. For sure, it is a long journey ahead, and the goal will not be an Eco-School badge but rather a sea change in how we reconnect with our surroundings in a meaningful, sustainable, and enjoyable manner.

We all want the beauty of this part of the world to stay the same and so embracing change is essential. The volunteers, Carmen, the Eco-School committee and our students will no doubt, once again, do us all proud.
