Maths Is Everywhere: Exploring Mathematics Across School Subjects

Maths is everywhere. What do we mean by that? Is it important? Here are some answers from our primary aged students:

“I like maths because it’s for engineering and when I grow up I’m going to be an engineer. I love maths.” - Ivan Year 4
“It’s important in my lessons and when I make my mum’s famous mac and cheese. I know I need to use 1 litre of milk.” - Marielle, Year 5
“Well maths is everywhere in the world. You use it in calculations, you can check if you got something correct. If you are stuck with something you don’t know, you can try to recalculate.” Sacha, Year 5

Maths Is Everywhere Exploring Mathematics Across School Subjects

This week we have been celebrating the International Day of Maths and specifically this year’s theme of Playing with Maths. In classrooms children have been making and playing board games, completing mazes and taking part in quizzes, all with the aim of having fun with maths.

Mathematics is often perceived as a subject confined to textbooks and classrooms, but in reality, its influence extends far beyond these boundaries. At Mougins school, children engage with mathematics across various subjects and activities, showcasing its pervasive presence in everyday life. From measuring in science investigations to understanding patterns in art, maths truly is everywhere in the primary school curriculum.

Mathematics in Science

One of the most apparent applications of mathematics is in science. Children explore concepts such as measurement, data analysis, and geometry when conducting experiments and recording observations. Whether it's calculating the volume of liquids or interpreting graphs, mathematical skills are essential for understanding scientific principles and conducting accurate investigations.

Mathematics in Geography

Similarly, in geography, mathematics plays a crucial role. Students use mathematical concepts like coordinates and scales to read maps, analyse data related to population or weather patterns, and understand spatial relationships. This integration enhances their ability to comprehend geographical phenomena and make informed decisions about the world around them.

Mathematics in Literacy Activities

Maths also finds its way into literacy activities. When studying literature, students may analyse data related to the frequency of certain words or phrases in a text, enhancing their understanding of language patterns and vocabulary usage. Additionally, in creative writing, understanding mathematical concepts such as symmetry and patterns can inspire imaginative storytelling and poetry.

Mathematics in Physical Education

In physical education, mathematics contributes to understanding concepts like distance, speed, and angles during activities such as running, jumping, or throwing. By applying mathematical reasoning, students develop a deeper understanding of their physical capabilities and improve their performance in sports and fitness activities.

Mathematics in Music

In the realm of music, mathematics plays a harmonious role, evident in the fundamental principles of rhythm, melody, and harmony. From understanding time signatures, which are expressed as fractions within musical compositions, our students engage with mathematical concepts in their musical journey. 

Mathematics permeates every aspect of a primary school curriculum. By recognising and celebrating its presence across subjects, educators can foster a holistic understanding of maths and its real-world applications, equipping students with essential skills for lifelong learning and problem-solving. Maths truly is everywhere, waiting to be discovered and embraced by young learners.
