The Learning Curve

New Beginnings in Secondary

A fresh start. A new chapter. A beginning. New faces. New buildings. New timetables.

I could continue this list for a very long time.

The most important thing about starting the new year is feeling settled, feeling known.

As we came to the end of our Welcome Afternoon for new parents today, I was again struck by the sense that at Mougins British International School, with the help of my colleagues, students, and our incredible PTA, we once again felt a genuine sense of community.

Community, one of our four key values, is hard to pin down at times. It can be a feeling, something we can see, or a sense of togetherness. It is also something more practical.

Students greeting one another warmly. Asking, genuinely asking how one another is and how they are feeling about the year ahead.

Parents laughing together, sharing tips and tricks of what it takes to be a good mum or dad.

Teachers delighted to finally see students back in the building, eager to get the learning going again.

And most importantly, the building. Not in the noun sense, but the verb. The building of trust, of respect, of relationships that will extend across the years.

We have community spirit in spades here at MBIS. It will help to secure us all in our ambitions for our students as they go through the challenges and successes that are up ahead.

I very much look forward to working with you this year as we help them to realise, and unlock, their very real potential.
