The Learning Curve

Barcelona owes its iconic architecture to Antoni Gaudi. Spanish students have been learning about him throughout the school year in preparation for this trip. Y10 students have studied his ecological, creative and ingenious approach to architecture that has made Barcelona the iconic city it is today. 

La Sagrada Familia was originally classified as a chimera, a church for the poor people built with gifts from the citizens. Gaudi dedicated part of his life to the project and knowing that he would die before finishing it, he left the façade finished to force his successors to complete it.

Among the many architectural monuments visited, most students' favourite is la Sagrada Familia. Students often mention their favourite part of la Sagrada Familia is its attention to detail. 

Students discover the inside of La Sagrada Familia as a temple whose interior represents a forest. The columns rise up in search of the sun, the ceiling is composed of  branches and leaves that let the light through and on the sides of the temple, the stained glass windows are blue in the east and orange in the west, reflecting the different colours on the ground depending on the time of day when you visit.

Throughout the trip in Barcelona, students have discovered the wonders of the city by bike. From exploring the coastal boardwalk to the Parc Guell, our Y10 students put their Spanish lessons in practice and fully emerge into the culture.
